Hidden gems in Katwijk
Behind the boulevard and in the dunes around Katwijk lie places with a story that most visitors walk straight past.
- White Church: the Witte Kerkje on the boulevard of Katwijk dates from 1460 and once stood in the middle of the village, until storms washed the dunes away; in front stands the granite memorial Vissersweduwe met zoon from 1930.
- Mouth of the Old Rhine: at the end of the boulevard the Oude Rijn meets the sea at the Buitensluis. The outlet was dug in 1807 and the present sea lock followed in 1984.
- Village church: on Kerklaan in Katwijk aan den Rijn stands the Dorpskerk, founded in 1231 as the chapel of a leper house and so the first church in Katwijk; its tower and choir date from the late 13th century.
- Tank wall in the Panbos: a fifteen minute walk from the car park at Pan van Persijn, a section of Atlantic Wall tank wall stands in the middle of the woods, next to a row of pyramid-shaped dragon's teeth.
