Zuiderduinen - Nature
The Zuiderduinen near Katwijk, often locally known as the Zuidduinen, form a beautiful dune area south of Katwijk aan Zee. The area is part of Berkheide and lies within Nationaal Park Hollandse Duinen. Here you will find open dunes, dune grasslands, small woodlands, damp valleys and old dune fields.
What can you expect in the Zuiderduinen?
- Peaceful dune landscape: From Katwijk, you can walk straight into nature. Ideal for anyone wanting to escape the bustle of the beach and boulevard for a while.
- Old dune fields: In several places, traces can still be seen of former small fields where Katwijk fishing families once grew potatoes, vegetables and other crops.
- Historic remains: In the area there are still bunkers and other remains of the Atlantic Wall, partly hidden between sand, marram grass and shrubs.
- Rich nature: The Zuidduinen are part of a protected Natura 2000 area. You may spot dune plants, birds, rabbits and, with a bit of luck, even a sand lizard, roe deer or fox.
- Walking through Berkheide: Several routes run through the area, including the Kattukse Duinroute and the Boswachterspad Berkheide. There are also connections towards Panbos, Wassenaar and the beach.
Practical information
- Location: The Zuiderduinen lie directly south of Katwijk aan Zee and are easy to combine with a visit to the beach, the boulevard or the centre of Katwijk.
- Accessibility: The area is accessible via the indicated roads and paths. Due to loose sand and height differences, some routes are less suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The Zuiderduinen are a wonderful place for a short or longer walk full of nature, sea views and Katwijk history.
