Coepelduynen - Nature

The Coepelduynen nature area is a quiet and relatively unspoilt dune landscape between Noordwijk and Katwijk. The area is part of Hollands Duin and covers around 188 hectares. You will find high dunes, open grasslands, damp dune valleys and dense scrub.

What can you expect in the Coepelduynen?

• Peaceful nature: Thanks to the limited number of walking paths and the absence of busy recreational facilities, this is one of the quieter dune areas along the South Holland coast.
• Varied dune landscape: Wind, sand and rain ensure that the landscape is constantly changing. This continually creates new places for plants, insects and birds.
• Special plants: In spring and summer, dune pansies, grass-of-Parnassus, wild thyme, sea buckthorn and various species of orchids bloom here.
• Large grazers: Scottish Highland cattle and Konik horses help keep the dune area open and varied. Always keep a safe distance while walking.
• Birds and animals: The Coepelduynen are home to rabbits, foxes, butterflies, dragonflies and birds such as nightingale, whitethroat, willow warbler, woodlark and buzzard.
• Beautiful walking area: The unpaved paths lead past open dunes, sheltered valleys and lovely viewpoints. From the higher dunes, you can sometimes look out over the North Sea, the flower fields and the surrounding coastal towns.

Walking through the Coepelduynen

The Coepelduynen are especially attractive for walkers who enjoy peace, nature and wide dune landscapes. The walking paths connect with routes through Hollands Duin and can be easily combined with a walk towards the beach of Noordwijk or Katwijk.

• Opening times: The nature area is accessible all year round, usually from sunrise to sunset.
• Accessibility: Most paths are unpaved and consist of sandy and shell paths.
