Panorama Mesdag - Museum
Panorama Mesdag in The Hague shows a 360 degree painting of Scheveningen in 1881 by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. It is the only panorama in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in the world still in its original building.
What can you expect at Panorama Mesdag?
History: In 1880 Mesdag was commissioned by a Belgian company. Helped by his wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten and George Hendrik Breitner, among others, he painted the canvas in about four months. When the company went bankrupt in 1886, Mesdag bought the panorama himself. Exhibitions: The permanent display on Hendrik Willem and Sientje Mesdag has been renewed. Until 28 February 2027 there is an exhibition on painter Betzy Akersloot-Berg. Highlights: Highlights of Panorama Mesdag are:
- The panorama itself: over 14 metres high, about 120 metres around and some 1,680 square metres, viewed from an artificial dune.
