Vlaggeduin - Observation point
Het Vlaggeduin is the highest point of the Zuiderduinen near Katwijk and a beautiful spot for anyone who enjoys walking, dune nature and wide-open views. From this striking dune top, you can look out over the dunes, the North Sea, the beach of Katwijk and the landscape beyond.
What can you expect at Het Vlaggeduin?
- High viewpoint: At around 37 metres above NAP, Het Vlaggeduin is one of the highest natural dune tops in South Holland.
- Panorama over the coast: From the top, you have a lovely view over the North Sea, Katwijk and the extensive dunes. In clear weather, you can even see The Hague, Scheveningen and IJmuiden in the distance.
- Historic name: The name refers to the flagpole that once stood on the dune top. It served as a landmark for shipping and later also as a lookout point for the coastguard.
- Animals and plants: Along the way, you may come across dune plants such as marram grass and burnet rose. Birds, rabbits, foxes and Scottish Highland cattle also live in the area.
- Great for photography: Especially around sunrise and sunset, Het Vlaggeduin is a popular place to capture the dunes and the sea.
Peace, nature and views
Het Vlaggeduin is not a busy attraction, but rather a pleasant place where peace and nature take centre stage. The climb to the top is rewarded with one of the most beautiful panoramas on the South Holland coast.

- Location: Het Vlaggeduin lies in the Zuiderduinen, south of Katwijk aan Zee.
- Combine with: A visit is easy to combine with a walk through the dunes, a beach walk near Katwijk or a trip towards Wassenaar or Noordwijk.
