• Historical Importance: The Vuurbaak, after the Brandaris of Terschelling, is the oldest preserved lighthouse building in the Netherlands, playing a significant role in maritime history for centuries.

• Rich History: The request for the construction of the Vuurbaak dates back to 1605. Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik authorized in 1628 the levying of a toll for each sold fish piece to fund the maintenance and operation of the Vuurbaak.

• Evolving Technology: Originally, a wood fire was burned on the roof, later replaced by coal fire and in the 19th century by an oil lamp with reflector.

• Historical Function: The light was lit to guide ships of the own fleet. With the disappearance of the bomschuiten around 1912, the Vuurbaak lost its original function.

• Addition of Shrimp Boat: Since 1980, the Vuurbaak has been accompanied during the summer season by the former shrimp boat KW 88 ‘Zorg en Hoop’.
