Gouda - Village / City

Gouda is one of those cities you fall in love with straight away. Known for its world-famous cheese, but surprisingly varied once you start exploring. From a beautiful historic centre and atmospheric canals to lively market squares and interesting museums. Gouda is compact, authentic and perfect for a day trip or a weekend away.
The historic centre of Gouda
The centre of Gouda is wonderfully easy to navigate and almost entirely car-free. Narrow streets, old buildings and canals define the cityscape. Everything is within walking distance, so you can easily explore the city on foot.
- Medieval streets where you walk past historic buildings, small boutiques and specialist shops that perfectly reflect the city's historic character.
- Canals and little bridges that create a typically Dutch setting and beautiful photo opportunities on almost every corner.
- Lively squares with terraces and restaurants where you can settle down at any time of day.
The Markt and the City Hall
The very heart of Gouda is the Markt, one of the most beautiful market squares in the Netherlands. In the middle of the square stands the iconic Gothic city hall from the 15th century.
- Gouda City Hall, known worldwide as one of the oldest Gothic city halls in the Netherlands and a real eye-catcher.
- Chimes and carillon that ring out several times a day, providing an atmospheric soundtrack on the square.
- Terraces around the Markt where you can enjoy a coffee, lunch or drinks overlooking the city hall.
Tip: Visit the Markt both during the day and in the evening, when the city hall is beautifully lit.
The famous Gouda Cheese Market
Gouda and cheese are inextricably linked. From April to August, the traditional cheese market takes place every Thursday morning.
- Cheese carriers in traditional costume who carry the cheeses across the square in the authentic way.
- Hand-clap trading, where buyers and sellers negotiate the price by clapping hands.
- Cheese-making demonstrations that show how the famous Gouda cheese is produced.
- Plenty of photo opportunities, as the whole event is a colourful and lively spectacle.
Even outside the cheese market, you can taste and buy plenty of cheese at specialist cheese shops in the centre.
Sint-Janskerk and the Gouda Stained Glass Windows
At 123 metres, the Sint-Janskerk is the longest church in the Netherlands and an absolute must-see.
- The Goudse Glazen (Gouda stained glass windows), famous worldwide for their detail and splendour of colour.
- Biblical and historical scenes that tell stories of religion, power and life in earlier times.
- An impressive interior that combines peace, space and history in a unique way.
Even if you don't usually visit churches, this one is definitely worth it.
Museums in Gouda
For a city of its size, Gouda has a surprising number of interesting museums.
- Museum Gouda, where you learn all about the history of the city, its inhabitants and famous crafts.
- Gouda Cheese Experience, where you discover the story behind the cheese in an interactive way.
- Museumhaven Gouda, where historic ships are moored and you get a glimpse of the city's maritime past.
Gouda: city of candles and stroopwafels
Besides cheese, Gouda is known for its crafts and treats.
- Gouda candles, which have been made for centuries and stand for craftsmanship and quality.
- Stroopwafels, which taste best fresh and warm and really should not be missed during your visit.
- Local specialist shops where you can buy these typical Gouda products as souvenirs.
Tip: Get a fresh stroopwafel from a bakery or market stall, it is something else entirely compared to the supermarket version.
Walking along canals and hofjes
Gouda invites you to wander around at your leisure without a fixed plan.
- Lange Tiendeweg and Kleiweg, where you can enjoy shopping among historic façades.
- Old canals such as the Turfmarkt, offering quiet walks along the water.
- Hidden hofjes (almshouse courtyards) where you can escape the bustle for a moment and experience the quiet side of the city.
Events and atmosphere
Gouda is lively with events all year round.
- The cheese market, which attracts many visitors every week in spring and summer.
- Gouda bij Kaarslicht (Gouda by Candlelight), when the historic centre is lit by thousands of candles in December.
- Festival Gouda Waterstad with activities, music and events on and around the water.
